CII- Andhra Pradesh Technology development & Promotion Center in association with the Geographical Indications Registry, Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Govt. of India and Textiles Committee organized two workshops on Protection of Geographical Indications in India on the above mentioned dates.
Geographical Indications is one form of Intellectual Property Rights. In line with the TRIPS Agreement, Government of India has enacted the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration & Protection) Act, 1999 which seeks to provide for the registration and better protection of geographical indications relating to goods in India . This Act passed in 1999 was made functional from September 2003.
In India we have several goods & services that have their own distinctiveness in terms of the location of their origin. These form livelihood to many whose talent and creative skills are being competed in the local and international markets. Eg: Darjeeling Tea, Pochampally sarees, Alphonso mangoes and many more unidentified!
The Objective of the workshop was to :
>>Identify Goods & Services for protection under the GI Act >>To create awareness on protection of Geographical Indications and its tangible benefits .
>>To enable participants to understand the procedures for filing & registration of Geographical Indications .
