Biographical Data

Studied civil engineering In the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), completed his degree in 1959, later a mastery And a doctorate (1965) at the same institution. He specialized in Geotechnics. He was a visiting researcher at the Harvard University, where he collaborated with Arthur Casagrande.

From 1974 to 1982 he was director of the Institute of Engineering and from 1987 to 1991 of the Faculty of Engineering of the UNAM. He was a visiting professor at the National University of Engineering within Peru. From 1991 to 1995, he was president of the Board of Trustees of the Metropolitan Autonomous University (ONE). He was Undersecretary of Higher Education and Scientific Research at the Secretariat of Public Education (SEP).

He pioneered research on the interaction between solid particles and fluid in clay-water systems. He has specialized in foundation engineering, developed a procedure for evaluating deep foundation settlements based on stilt of friction.4He was a member of the Commission for the Reconstruction of the Metropolitan Area of Mexico City, of the Structural Security Advisory Committee of the Government of the Federal District. He was an advisor for the structural correction work of the Metropolitan Cathedral of Mexico City.

He was Deputy Technical Director of the National Water Commission, Deputy Director of Programming at the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) and Deputy Director of Higher Education and Scientific Research of the Federal Government of Mexico. He is part of the Council of the Chronicle of Mexico City and the Advisory Council of the Consortium of Mexican Universities.

From 1980 to 1981, he was president of the Mexican Academy of Sciences. From 1982 to 1987 he was general secretary of the National Council for Science and Technology. From 1987 to 1991, he was president of the “Ricardo J. Zeveda” Fund for Studies and Research, and at the same time he was a member of the Advisory Committee on Science and Technology for the Development of Organization of the United Nations (UN). In June 2008, he was elected full member of the Mexican Culture Seminar.5He was a member of the Science Advisory Council of the Presidency of the Republic and honorary member of the Mexican Society for Soil Mechanics and of the Academy of Engineering.6
