Learn about the Pan-American Academy of Engineering

Founded in 2000, the API brings together outstanding engineers across the Americas.

Our Mission and Objectives

  • Recognize relevant contributions made to the progress of the profession and technological development by distinguished engineering personalities from the countries of America, incorporating them as Members.

  • Cooperate and interact with other Academies, with UPADI and the Federations of Engineers that integrate it, Universities and Research Centers in the identification and search for solutions to problems in which engineering can help the development of American countries.

  • Study and evaluate advances in knowledge in engineering and technology and disseminate the achievements and results of engineers' achievements for the benefit of humanity.

  • To create awareness among engineers of the need to maintain a continuous process of professional improvement and high standards of ethics and to motivate them to a constant search for excellence.

  • Organize, promote or sponsor with UPADI, with other engineering organizations, or with scientific, technical and educational institutions, technical meetings, congresses and seminars to analyze issues that require concrete and updated solutions.

The History of the Pan-American Academy of Engineering

The idea of creating an Engineering Academy for the American Continent was born in UPADI — Pan American Union of Engineering Associations, within its Engineering Teaching Committee in the late 80s, when its President was Prof. Ing. Miguel Ángel Yadarola.

Foundation:

In Panama 2000, with the approval of new nominations proposed by UPADI Members, the Board of Directors convened the 30 Candidates Elected to join the first membership of the Pan-American Academy of Engineering, signing the Foundation Act at a Solemn Ceremony.

Founders:

The initiative was proposed to the UPADI Board of Directors meeting in Caracas in 1989 as the Inter-American Academy for Engineering Education to bring together engineers who had excelled in the field of education in each of the countries of the Americas. The proposal was accompanied by a set of guiding ideas for the Statutes, which were discussed and agreed upon by Committee Members.

Foundation

Miguel Yadarola and Reyes Guerra proposed creating, through the Committee, an independent institution, for UPADI to publicly honor outstanding Engineering Professors of the American Continent. The other committee members (i.e., Gonzalo Jiménez, Carlos Santana, Robert Kersten, Lueny Morell and Hugo Wainstock) supported the idea.

Membership Expectations:

The requirements for those who are nominated as Members by the National Academies of their countries included values of excellence in: (1) the training of Engineers; (2) educational innovations; and (3) important publications.

Initial Academy Name:

The name that was initially proposed was the Inter-American Academy of Engineering Education (AIEI).

The First Statutes of the Academy:

The Statutes of other National Academies from several countries (e.g., Argentina, USA) were used as precedents. United States, Mexico and some European countries), as well as the existing statutes of the Academies of Engineering, Education, Medicine and Law.

Creation of the Academy:

In 1989, at the meeting of the EEC held in Caracas, Venezuela, the Committee unanimously approved the adoption of the text of the statutes prepared by Yadarola, with the inclusion of other collaborations, and the Academy was officially created.

Academy Approval:

In 1990, at the UPADI Convention held in Washington, DC, the proposal was presented and approved by the UPADI Board of Directors.

Change of name:

Driven by a broader vision, in which the Academy would create a new form of integration of engineers in the Americas through the identification and selection of outstanding engineers from each country of the Americas who had the necessary qualifications for induction as distinguished academics, the initial name was changed to its current name: Academia Panamericana de Ingeniería (API).

The Statutes of the Academy:

Over time, the statutes of the API have been modified in various Plenary Assemblies of API Members, as the need for modifications arose.

Twentieth Anniversary of the Foundation of the Academy:

The Academy's 20th Official Anniversary was celebrated at the 2020 API Meeting, held virtually due to the COVID-19 Global Pandemic.
