Biographical Data

Senior Professor of the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy at PUC-Rio and Director of the Center for Management and Strategic Studies — CGEE, an organization of the Ministry of Science and Technology. Head of the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy (1979-83); Dean of the Technical Scientific Center (1983-86); Coordinator of the Development Sector (2001-2006).

In general, his research is carried out in projects sponsored by industry or development agencies, with an emphasis on interaction with companies, including: CBMM, CSN, Usiminas, CENPES, CEPEL and Villares. The large projects allowed the establishment of an adequate research infrastructure. These include projects funded by the European Community, FINEP-FNDCT, OMEGA-MCT-Petrobras and, in the PRONEX program, the Modeling and Characterization of Phase Transformations project. He has been invited to present dozens of conferences and seminars at various universities and research centers in the country, as well as at events and institutions abroad (University of Texas, Austin, 1994, USA; Hasylab, Hamburg, 1994, Germany; ICPM, Sheniang, 1995, China; Swansea University and University of Birmingham, 2000, United Kingdom; HTCPM, Hokkaido, 2000, Japan; University of Cambridge, 2004, England; Sapporo Meeting, 2005, Japan; Serbian Academy of Sciences, 2006).

Professor Rizzo's scientific output includes comprehensive guidance for 23 master's dissertations, 9 doctoral theses, more than 80 publications in international journals and 180 publications in conference proceedings. In 2003 he was elected Full Member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences - ABC, and Fellow of the American Metals Society - ASM International in recognition of his contribution to the field of materials science and engineering. Director, Vice President and President of the Brazilian Association of Metallurgy and Materials (ABM) (1990-97), one of the most traditional technical-scientific societies in the country, founded in 1944.

Education

Metallurgical Engineer, Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro, in 1970.

Master of Science from the Military Institute of Engineering (1973) and Doctorate from the University of Florida (1978).
