Biographical Data

Michael (Mike) Sanio F.ASCE, ENV-SP has a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada; a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin; and, received - Honorary Professor to the Doctor from Ricardo Palma University, Lima 2009. He was Vice President of the Reston Association. He is currently President of the Pan-American Federation of Engineering Organizations — UPADI Sustainability Committee, winner of its Golden Plum Award/Gold Plomade, Member of the Pan-American Academy of Engineers — API, and its Treasurer, appointed to Fairfax County. Building Code Appeals Board, member of ASCE and ENV-SP.

For the past two decades, it has been at the forefront of organizing various policies, programs and events for hundreds of engineering societies around the world, including close relationships with the 120 members of the World Federation of Engineering Organizations, representing 30 million engineers. He currently supports ASCE, as President of the UPADI Sustainability Committee, to bring together the 20 national member societies of Canada, the United States, Mexico, Central, South America, the Caribbean and Spain at the UPADI General Assembly in mid-March in Washington DC.

Mike worked for the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), serving as Executive Advisor on Sustainability, where he was responsible for providing exceptional leadership in global sustainability. He currently serves as a member of its Sustainability Committee and is an Atlas Infrastructure Advocate.

One of his most notable achievements was his work in establishing a sustainability program that led to the formation of the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure and the development of the Envision Rating System. Mike was also instrumental in creating a sustainable infrastructure standard, developing the new ASCE Sustainable Infrastructure Certification Program, creating a series of successful International Conferences on Sustainable Infrastructure (ICSI), and forming the International Coalition for Sustainable Infrastructure.

Mike has numerous additional accomplishments under his belt, including managing the Global Anti-Corruption Education and Training Program (ACET) and the ASCE Working Committee on Global Principles for Professional Conduct that developed the ASCE Anti-Corruption Policy.

Mike has diverse local, national and international experience in the areas of environment and sustainable development. He has worked for the World Bank/Global Environment Fund, where he was responsible for developing and leading private sector strategy, organizing international executive forums and initiating innovative projects with the private sector, NGOs, development banks and governments. In addition to other positions, he has served as Executive Director of the World Engineering Association for Sustainable Development, Deputy President of WFEO-Comtech and consultant for the United Nations National Environment Program, the United Nations Development Program. He was the lead author of the discussion paper of the Major Group on Science and Technology of the World Summit on Sustainable Development that led to the 2002 meeting in Johannesburg.

Current Position

He is currently President of the Pan American Federation of Engineering Organizations - UPADI Sustainability Committee with 20 national member societies from Canada, the United States, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean and Spain.

He also serves as Executive Director of the Atlas Initiative for Climate-Resilient Infrastructure. The Atlas Initiative functions as the global action arm for the environment, climate resilience and sustainable infrastructure, providing outreach and participation to engineering organizations, infrastructure professionals and sustainability experts for financial institutions and governments at all levels.
