The API promotes knowledge exchange through specialized conferences on structural safety
San Juan, Puerto Rico
As part of the collaboration agreement between the Pan-American Academy of Engineering (API) and the Mexican Academy of Engineering (AIM), we invite you to attend the conference "Safety of Existing Structures Under Uncertainty: A Probabilistic Approach Based on Observed Performance," presented by Dr. Jorge Luis Alamilla López, Titular Academic of the Civil Engineering Specialty Commission at the Mexican Academy of Engineering.
The conference will address one of the greatest challenges facing contemporary structural engineering: the assessment of safety and reliability in existing structures under conditions of uncertainty.
During his presentation, Dr. Alamilla López will outline the evolution of a research line developed from his doctoral thesis on reliability-based seismic design criteria for multi-story reinforced concrete structures, enriched by over two decades of research and professional experience.
The presentation will examine methodologies for assessing structural reliability through indices, rates, and probabilities of failure, considering factors such as uncertainty associated with ground motion, material properties, structural element behavior, and acting loads. This approach strengthens evaluation, design, and decision-making processes to contribute to the development of safer, more resilient, and sustainable infrastructure.
At the API, we extend this invitation to our members as part of the joint efforts we promote between both academies to facilitate knowledge exchange, strengthen technical cooperation, and foster the development of engineering across the Americas.
More than just a conference, this meeting represents an opportunity to share experiences, strengthen ties between sister academies, and reflect on the challenges facing structural engineering in an increasingly complex and uncertain environment.
