Zulma Pardo Inducted into the Select Group of ASCE Fellows
San Juan, Puerto Rico
The Pan American Academy of Engineering (API) celebrates the election of Colombian engineer Zulma Stella Pardo Vargas as a Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), one of the most prestigious distinctions a civil engineering professional can achieve internationally.
This recognition is one of the highest honors conferred by ASCE, an organization founded in 1852 and considered the oldest professional civil engineering society in the United States. The Fellow category is reserved for engineers who have demonstrated an outstanding career, sustained leadership, significant contributions to the development of the profession, and a proven impact on the advancement of engineering and the well-being of society.
The designation, in turn, distinguishes a select group of members whose achievements represent the highest standards of professional excellence, integrity, and service.
For API, this election represents a source of deep pride, recognizing the excellence of one of its key leaders and highlighting the talent, technical capability, and leadership that distinguish Latin American engineering on the international stage.
Pardo Vargas serves as the second vice president of API and is the director of ZJ Ingenieros Estructurales Ltda., a firm from which she has led significant consulting and structural design projects. Her career has been marked by a combination of technical excellence, commitment to training new generations of engineers, and continuous participation in professional organizations dedicated to strengthening the discipline.
A civil engineer from the National University of Colombia, she later earned a Master's in Structures from the same institution. Her academic background also includes a Specialization in Construction Management from the Catholic University of Colombia, as well as a Specialization and a Master's in Information and Communication Technologies applied to Education from the National Pedagogical University of Colombia, a preparation that reflects a comprehensive vision of engineering, linked to innovation and professional development.
Her leadership has also been demonstrated through her membership on the Board of Directors of the Colombian Association of Structural Engineering and as the author of over a dozen papers presented at specialized conferences and published in technical journals, contributions that have advanced knowledge dissemination and strengthened structural engineering in the region.
Pardo Vargas's election as an ASCE Fellow recognizes a career built on excellence, innovation, and service. At the same time, it acknowledges the contributions Latin American professionals make to developing safer, more resilient, and sustainable infrastructure, as well as engineering's capacity to positively transform the lives of communities.
API extends its warmest congratulations to our colleague Zulma Stella Pardo Vargas for this significant achievement, convinced that her example will continue to inspire new generations of professionals and strengthen the presence of Ibero-American engineering in the world's leading technical forums.
