Georgia Tech President Appointed Honorary Member of the API
Panama City - September 18, 2025
Dr. Ángel Cabrera Izquierdo received the title of Honorary Member of the Pan-American Academy of Engineering (API) during the official events that marked the beginning of the organization's Silver Jubilee celebration.
The event, held on September 18, 2025, at the Sheraton Hotel in Panama City, brought together several dozen outstanding academics and engineering professionals from all over the Americas, who took advantage of the conclave to speak, for two days, on topics of great relevance to the future of engineering.
The title of Honorary Member of the API constitutes a highly prestigious distinction that recognizes internationally renowned personalities for their contributions to engineering development.
Cabrera Izquierdo, a Spanish engineer with extensive experience, studied Telecommunications Engineering at the Polytechnic University of Madrid and was awarded a Fulbright grant, which allowed him to carry out postgraduate studies and a doctorate in Cognitive Psychology at the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech).
His academic career, focused on learning, management and leadership, began in 1998 as a professor at the IE Business School, an institution of which he was dean between 2000 and 2004. He later directed the Thunderbird School of Global Management and, in 2012, became president of George Mason University.
On June 13, 2019, Cabrera Izquierdo was appointed president of Georgia Tech, becoming the first president of an American university born in Spain.
His participation in the API Silver Jubilee also coincided with the fifteenth anniversary of the Center for Innovation and Logistics Research at Georgia Tech Panama, an academic initiative launched in 2010 between the renowned university and the Government of Panama with the purpose of strengthening the country's position as the axis of maritime trade and logistics center of the Americas.
During his speech at the API event, Cabrera Izquierdo gave a keynote speech entitled “Artificial Intelligence in Engineering”, in which he shared the findings of his most recent research on the role of artificial intelligence in innovation and development processes. His exhibition captivated the audience and marked the beginning of the celebrations for the twenty-fifth anniversary of the API, which revolved around the theme “Artificial intelligence and engineering for socio-economic development and human well-being”.
The API Silver Jubilee was held simultaneously with the XVI International Congress of Civil Engineering 2025, organized by the College of Civil Engineers of Panama (COICI) and the Panamanian Society of Engineers and Architects (SPIA).
